Lesson 387: "The Green, Green Grass of Home"
If you live in cattle country, you will drive on roads winding between pastures and grasslands. You might notice at times that the cows on one side of the road will be crowded next to the fence, all gazing across the road. If there are no “kindred” in the field across the way then we have to assume they are looking for green grass. Aren’t we all? Most seek a better way of life, finer house, higher education and job promotion. Even if we are “settled” to our lot in life we urge our children to strive for higher levels.
I have never seen live stock “look up” nor have I seen them “on their knees” as if in prayer. Their heads are down, chomping away, strolling along until a fence halts their progress. This happens to man-kind when they are so focused on earthly wealth. They run into obstacles, fenced in with only trampled grass under their feet and in their wake. “Do not store up treasures for yourselves here on earth, but store your treasures in heaven” (Matt. 6:19-20).
To find the greener grass (treasures/blessings) we must look up! From our knees in prayer! From Abraham men have been looking for a city built by God (Heb. 11:”10) and you can be sure that this City will be the ultimate green pastures. “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor. 2:9, John 14:1-3). Cattle do not have much to look forward to but Christians have hope of life eternal; the green, green grass of HOME!
