Lesson 326: "Humpty Dumpty"

Rumor has it that Humpty Dumpty did not fall off the wall but that he was pushed. This has not been proven nor has the mystery of who might have pushed the giant egg been solved. I tend to believe he was pushed and my suspicion is that the old wolf in sheep’s clothing was the culprit. The ferocious wolf visualized the fairy tale favorite as a delicious omelet so he donned the soft, white wool and took on the demeanor of a mild mannered sheep. This enabled him to draw near to the unsuspecting egg, gaining his trust. Before long the hunger rose up uncontrollably in the wolf and lunging for his breakfast, he caused the destruction of the trustful egg. As you all know, Humpty Dumpty is only a fairy tale character, however, the bible warns of wolves in seep’s clothing lurking about ready to spring upon the unsuspecting Christians who have put their trust in them. These “illegal sheep” will climb over your “defense-fence” and enter into your life and destroy you (John 10:1). These wolves are controlled by Satan, and Satan’s main purpose here on this earth is to steal (your faith), kill (your joy in Christ) and destroy (your fellowship with God) and he will use whatever means he can to do this (John 10:10).

As far back as the book of Genesis we are told that sin is crouching at the door, desiring to “have us” but we must master it (Gen. 4:7). We also must learn the difference between serving the hired hand and serving the Good Shepherd (Matt. 6:24). “The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep”. Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd and He says He will lay down His life for His sheep (John 10:11-18) and indeed He did just that on the Cross. This hired hand could be anyone around you that you trust to teach you the Word of God. Ezekiel warns that these could be false teachers/prophets who are like wolves tearing away at the prey for unjust gain. They say the Lord told them to tell you things when the Lord has not spoken (Eze. 22:26-29). 1 John 2:27 states that we do not need anyone to teach us because the anointing teaches us about all things. This anointing is the Holy Spirit whom the Father sent in the name of Jesus (John 14:26).

Jesus warned that false prophets would come in sheep’s clothing (Matt. 7:15), however He did send out the disciples “like sheep among the wolves” (Matt. 10:16) so we do not ignore these wolves but meet them head on and ask God to give us the wisdom to deal with them (James 1:5-6). Paul knew that after he left Ephesus that savage wolves would come and scatter or destroy the flock and he warned these people, with tears, to be on their guard (Acts 20:29-30). Isaiah writes the prophecy about Jesus Christ coming to save us because, “we all, like sheep, have gone astray” (Isa. 53:6) but rest assured that after Jesus saved His sheep He remembers each and every one of us. “I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and they shall never perish” (John 10:27-29). Like Peter, Jesus has asked those of us who love Him to feed His sheep (John 21:15-17) and protect them from the wolves.

Humpty Dumpty was unaware of the danger lurking about him. We, like Paul, can be hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed (2 Cor. 4:8). Do not be a Humpty Dumpty but be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy, the devil prowls around like a roaring lion and a sheep in wolf’s clothing looking for someone to devour. Resist him and stand firm in your faith (1 Peter 5:8-9).
