Lesson 364: "Revelaton and the Old Testament"
A person will never properly understand the New Testament Scriptures if the Old Testament Scriptures remain a mystery. Almost everyone knows about Noah and the ark, Moses and the Red Sea and Jonah in the belly of the big fish but the Old Testament in itself often seems to be only a loosely knit group of stories. There are “said” to be about 350 direct quotes or clear allusions from the Old Testament found in the Book of Revelation. We will save the “allusions” for another time and check out the more direct quotes. We will look at these as prophecies from the Old Testament that will come to pass in the last days.
- In Daniel’s vision he saw “one like the son of man coming with the clouds of heaven” (Dan. 7:13-Rev. 1:7).
- Psalm 2:8 we find a prophecy where God promises to “make the nations your inheritance” (Rev. 2:26).
- To the obstinate nation God promises to “break it in pieces like pottery” (Isa. 30:14-Rev. 2:27).
- People brag about having wealth (Hosea 12:8) but true wealth must be bought from God (Rev. 3:17-18).
- Thousands upon thousands of angels will accompany Christ in the Judgment (Dan. 7:10-Rev.5:11).
- THE High Priest will be given a crown of gold (Zech. 6:11-Rev. 6:2).
- The sky and its lights will disappear (Jer. 4:23-Rev. 6:14).
- There will be a great Day of Wrath (Zeph. 1:14-15-Rev. 6:17).
- David said; “the Lord is my Shepherd” (Ps. 23:1) and that Shepherd is in Revelation 7:17.
- Ezekiel spoke of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur (Ezek. 38:22) and God pours it down (Rev. 8:7).
- The plague of darkness that God brought on Egypt (Ex. 10:21) He will bring again (Rev. 8:12).
- Evil men will seek death (Jer. 8:3-Rev. 9:6).
- Both Daniel (Dan. 8:26) and John (Rev. 10:4) were told to seal up the visions.
- The two witnesses (Zech. 4:12-14) are revealed in Revelation 11:4-6.
- The celebration of gift giving (Es. 9:19-Rev. 11:10).
- The Accuser of Job (Job 1:9-11) is hurled out of heaven (Rev. 12:10).
- Babylon has fallen (Isa. 21:9-Rev. 14:8).
- The sickle is swung and the harvest is reaped (Joel 3:13-Rev. 14:16).
The command from God to not subtract or add to what He sets comes in Deuteronomy 4:2, they are repeated sharply in Proverbs 30:6 and they are the last Words in the Book of Revelation (22:19). As you study the Book of Revelation, search the cross references and find that our Lord is indeed the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb. 13:8) and what He has planned from before creation of the earth, He will do (Isa. 46:11). “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plans to His servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7) and these prophets wrote all of God’s revelations down for us. God has plans for YOU (Jer. 29:11-14)! Read His Book and find out what they are!
