Lesson 322: "Sex In The City"
Sex in the City is a very popular television series that I tuned in to while surfing the channels. Five minutes was all I needed to learn all I wanted to about this show. The main goal of the characters is just what the title suggests. Have sex with everyone in the city. I did not stay tuned long enough to even learn the name of the city in which they live and “play” but I can tell you that it is not The City in the final book of our Bible. This Holy City, the New Jerusalem (Rev. 21:2) is pure and beautiful and there will be no sexually immoral living there (Rev. 22:15). However I did find a similarity between the television city and the biblical city of Sodom.
Sodom was a legendary city in the vicinity of the Dead Sea and the name may have arisen from the words field, burning or enclosed space which parallels with the judgment of Babylon in Revelation (Rev. 18) and the lake of fire eternal dwelling of the un-saved (Rev. 20:15). Sodom is remembered as such an excessively evil city that the wrath of God came upon it. Genesis reflects both sexual perversity and gross inhospitality (Gen. 19:1-11) at Sodom. Some writers equate Sodom with a warning (Deut. 29:17-29) and sometimes as an accusation against the Covenant people (Amos 4:11, Isa. 1:9-11). The same idea is found in the New Testament (Matt. 10:15, Rom. 9:29, 2 Pet. 2:6, Jude 7).
The precise location for the ancient city is not known, though most conjecture centers around the Dead Sea. The precise location for the television city is not known, though most of the scenes/script suggests a sea of morally and spiritually dead. You might say that there is no harm in just watching the television show since you have no intentions of acting the way the characters do and you might assure yourself that they are after all, just acting. Remember this! The devil is “the ruler of the kingdom of the air” (Eph. 2:2) and the television set is a “member” of the airways. Watching these illicit sex shows is giving the devil a foothold (Eph. 4:27) and from there he will be able to control your thoughts even when your television is turned off. Jesus warned that if you commit adultery in your heart then you have committed adultery physically (Matt. 5:27-28). Question is, can you truly watch this show without thinking “how it might be if you were involved”?
What is aired on television within your house becomes like smoke. It will creep into every nook and cranny of your home and it is hard to get rid of. Like smoke, it can cause permanent damage! Jude 7 tells us that the people in Sodom, and surrounding towns, gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. “They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire”. God has given us examples of what NOT to do here on earth and He has also given us a fair warning of what will happen in the final judgment. Those who continue in illicit, unrepentant sex will suffer the same fate as Sodom, burning sulfur. Do no get caught there!
