The first sixty-nine weeks of the prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27 was fulfilled at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in thereabouts 30 AD. The final week, or seven year period, is yet to be fulfilled. The final week will start when the ruler from the ten nation confederacy of Europe signs a seven year treaty with the nation of Israel.

The signing of this treaty marks the start of the end-times events. The two witnesses in Revelation chapter eleven will start their ministry at the signing of the treaty as well.

This prophecy contains two people that are identified as the "ruler." The first is the Anointed One, who is Jesus Christ, and the second is the man frequently called the Antichrist. His identity is a little harder to see, but is clear once you do see it.

He is identified in this way: "The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary." Now we know that the people that came and destroyed the city were the legions of the Roman Empire, so we know that the ruler who will come comes from that people. This cannot be referring to Jesus, because Jesus' people did not come and destroy the city; right? Yes, that is right.

Also the second ruler cannot be Jesus Christ, because that would mean that Jesus would cause the temple to be desecrated--an unthinkable thing.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. (NIV)

Paul tells us here that it is the man of lawlessness that enters the temple and causes the abomination that causes desolation.

The signing of the treaty marks the time that Revelation chapter four through Revelation chapter nineteen starts its fulfillment.
